Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Tunnel Hill GA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Tunnel Hill GA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Tunnel Hill GA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Tunnel Hill GA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Georgia or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

Tunnel Hill GA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Tunnel Hill GA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Tunnel Hill home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Tunnel Hill GA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Tunnel Hill GA area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Tunnel Hill GA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Tunnel Hill GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Tunnel Hill healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Tunnel Hill GA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Tunnel Hill GA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Tunnel Hill, Georgia

Tunnel Hill is a town in northwest Whitfield County and southern Catoosa County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Dalton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,209 at the 2000 census. The town is named for the Chetoogeta Mountain Tunnel, a 1,497-foot (456 m) railroad tunnel built in the late 1840s.

The community was first known as Doe Run. It was incorporated on March 4, 1848, as Tunnelsville, and changed its name in 1856 to Tunnel Hill. Both names refer to the nearby 1,497-foot (456 m) Chetoogeta Mountain Tunnel railroad tunnel cut through Chetoogeta Mountain, officially dedicated on October 31, 1849 by Etowah steel-maker Mark A. Cooper on behalf of the state-owned Western & Atlantic Railroad.

Throughout the American Civil War, the homes around Tunnel Hill were used as part of a major hospital system. Wounded CSA Gen. John Bell Hood was brought to the Clisby Austin House after the Battle of Chickamauga. His leg was buried in a family cemetery near the house. The Clisby Austin House also served as the headquarters for Union Gen. William T. Sherman while he made his plans for attacks against nearby Dalton and Resaca, which became the opening battles of what would later be known as the Atlanta Campaign. The area hosted many engagements and camps throughout the course of the war. These are remembered through an annual Battle Reenactment held in September.
