Sharon GA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Sharon GA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure

  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Sharon GA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Sharon GA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Georgia or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

Sharon GA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Sharon GA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Sharon home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

What to ask Sharon GA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sharon GA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Sharon GA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Sharon GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Sharon healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Sharon GA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sharon GA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
