Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Redan GA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Redan GA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Georgia or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

Redan GA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Redan GA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Redan home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Redan GA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Redan GA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Redan GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Redan GA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Redan medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Redan GA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Redan GA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
