First, you must find the right program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each college in order to evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? A number of students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in detail later in this article. Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Peachtree City GA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Peachtree City GA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Peachtree City GA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Peachtree City GA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Georgia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Peachtree City GA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Peachtree City GA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Peachtree City home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Peachtree City GA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Peachtree City GA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Peachtree City GA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Peachtree City GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Peachtree City health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Peachtree City GA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Peachtree City GA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
