Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Gray GA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Gray GA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Gray GA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Gray GA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Georgia or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

Gray GA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Gray GA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Gray home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Gray GA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Gray GA area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Gray GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have associations with Gray GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Gray medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Gray GA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Gray GA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
