Sonographer Occupation Description

Spring Hill FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Spring Hill FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Spring Hill FL ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Spring Hill FL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

Spring Hill FL student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Spring Hill FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Spring Hill home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Spring Hill FL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Spring Hill FL area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Spring Hill FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Spring Hill FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Spring Hill healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Spring Hill FL home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Spring Hill FL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Spring Hill, Florida

Spring Hill is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hernando County, Florida, United States. The population was 98,621 at the 2010 census,[1] up from 69,078 at the 2000 census. The American Community Survey estimated the population in 2016 to be 111,189.[4] Spring Hill belongs to Florida's Nature Coast region and is in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area. It is east of Hernando Beach, southwest of Brooksville, and north of Tampa.

Spring Hill first appeared on Hernando County maps as early as 1856 along what is today Fort Dade Avenue just north of the community of Wiscon.[5] The modern Spring Hill was founded in 1967 as a planned community, which was developed by the Deltona Corporation and the Mackle Brothers. The developers originally wanted to call the community Spring Lake and used that as the working name through the development process. They were forced to use a different name due to the name Spring Lake already being in use locally and chose Spring Hill.[6] The plans for the community are identical to the community of Deltona. The Mackle Brothers sold many of the properties and land in the area through intense advertising.[7] It has since become a sprawling semi-city in its own right, though it is an unincorporated area. The main entrance to the original development is marked by the Spring Hill waterfall on Spring Hill Drive and U.S. Route 19 (Commercial Way).

Spring Hill is located in southwestern Hernando County at 28°28′44″N 82°32′52″W / 28.47889°N 82.54778°W / 28.47889; -82.54778 (28.478929, & 82.547732).[8] It is bordered to the west by Timber Pines; to the north by Weeki Wachee, North Weeki Wachee, High Point, Brookridge, and Wiscon; and to the east by South Brooksville, Garden Grove, and Masaryktown. To the south it is bordered by Shady Hills and Heritage Pines in Pasco County.
