They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Punta Gorda FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Punta Gorda FL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Punta Gorda FL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Punta Gorda FL student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Punta Gorda FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Punta Gorda home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Punta Gorda FL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Punta Gorda FL area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Punta Gorda FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Punta Gorda FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Punta Gorda health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Punta Gorda FL residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Punta Gorda FL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Punta Gorda, Florida

Punta Gorda (/ˌpʌntə ˈɡɔːrdə/; English: Fat Point[6]) is a city in Charlotte County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census the city had a population of 16,641.[7] It is the county seat of Charlotte County[8] and the only incorporated municipality in the county. Punta Gorda is the principal city of the Punta Gorda, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area and is also in the Sarasota-Bradenton-Punta Gorda Combined Statistical Area.[9]

Punta Gorda was the scene of massive destruction after Charley, a Category 4 hurricane, came through the city on August 13, 2004. Charley was the strongest tropical system to hit Florida since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and the first hurricane since Hurricane Donna in 1960 to make a direct hit on Florida's southwest coast.[10] In the immediate years following the storm, buildings were restored or built to hurricane-resistant building codes. The new buildings, restorations and amenities concurrently preserved the city's past while showcasing newer facilities. During this time, Laishley Park Municipal Marina was built and the Harborwalk, Linear Park and various trails were created throughout the city for bicycle and pedestrian traffic.[11]

The name Punta Gorda ("Fat Point") has been on maps at least since 1851, referring to a point of land that juts into Charlotte Harbor, an estuary off the Gulf of Mexico. It was in the late 1800s that early settlers began to arrive in what is the present-day Punta Gorda area.[12]
