Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

North Fort Myers FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in North Fort Myers FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

North Fort Myers FL ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with North Fort Myers FL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

North Fort Myers FL student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local North Fort Myers FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your North Fort Myers home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask North Fort Myers FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the North Fort Myers FL area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous North Fort Myers FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have associations with North Fort Myers FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the North Fort Myers health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their North Fort Myers FL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the North Fort Myers FL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
