Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

New Port Richey FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in New Port Richey FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

New Port Richey FL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through New Port Richey FL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

New Port Richey FL student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local New Port Richey FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your New Port Richey home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask New Port Richey FL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the New Port Richey FL area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous New Port Richey FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with New Port Richey FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the New Port Richey healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their New Port Richey FL residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the New Port Richey FL area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

In 1915 a separate post office was established for the residents of the southern part of Port Richey. The post office was named New Port Richey, and the name became official. The first postmaster was Gerben DeVries. The growth of the city came about after George Sims purchased the Port Richey Land Company. He built a home in New Port Richey in 1916.

The first Chasco Fiesta was held in 1922 to raise money for the local library. The event was revived in 1947 and has been held annually since then. It includes a large street parade and a boat parade on successive Saturdays.

The first act of the city council was to accept Enchantment Park as a gift from George Sims. The park was renamed Sims Park. The main attractions of the city were the park, the Pithlachascotee River, and Orange Lake.
