Maitland FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Maitland FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Maitland FL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

Maitland FL student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Maitland FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Maitland home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Maitland FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Maitland FL area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Maitland FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Maitland FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Maitland healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Maitland FL home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Maitland FL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Maitland is one of the oldest incorporated suburban municipalities in central Florida. The area was previously inhabited by Timucuan Native Americans. The town was originally named for a nearby Lake, which honored Captain William Seton Maitland, who fought in the Second Seminole Indian War, and was slain in the battle of Wahoo Swamp. A small military outpost was built in 1838 on the western shore of Lake Fumecheliga (later Lake Maitland) during the Second Seminole War. After the Civil War, The area began to grow, and a post office opened at Lake Maitland in 1872.[6] Around this post office, a small town grew. The area was put into extensive citrus production.[7]

Lake Maitland was incorporated as a town in 1885, the fifth town in Orange County to do so. For many years, Lake Maitland remained rural village, beautified by large oak trees planted by early town aldermen. However, the old town began to rapidly modernize as Orlando's suburban sprawl reached the town in the mid 1920s.
