Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Jupiter FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Jupiter FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Jupiter FL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Jupiter FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

Jupiter FL student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Jupiter FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Jupiter home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Jupiter FL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Jupiter FL area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Jupiter FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Jupiter FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Jupiter healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Jupiter FL home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Jupiter FL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Jupiter, Florida

Jupiter is the northernmost town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. According to a 2017 Census Bureau estimate, the town had a population of 64,976. It is 87 miles north of Miami, and the northernmost community in the Miami metropolitan area,[9] home to 6,012,331 people in a 2015 Census Bureau estimate. Jupiter was rated as the 12th Best Beach Town in America by WalletHub in 2018, and as the 9th Happiest Seaside Town in America by Coastal Living in 2012.[10][11]

The area where the town now sits was originally named for the Hobe Indian tribe which lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River and whose name is also preserved in the name of nearby Hobe Sound.[12] A mapmaker misunderstood the Spanish spelling Jobe of the native people name Hobe and recorded it as Jove.[13] Subsequent mapmakers further misunderstood this to be the name of the Roman god also known as Jupiter, and they adopted the more familiar name of Jupiter. The god Jupiter (or Zeus in the Greek mythology) is the chief Roman god, and god of light, of the sky and weather, and of the state and its welfare and its laws. Jupiter's consort was Juno, inspiring a neighboring town to name itself Juno Beach.[14]

The most notable landmark is the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, completed in 1860. Made of brick, it was painted red in 1910 to cover discoloration caused by humidity. Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 sandblasted the paint from the upper portion of the tower, and the tower was repainted using a potassium silicate mineral coating. The lighthouse is often used as the symbol for Jupiter.[14][15]
