Sonogram Tech Work Description

Boynton Beach FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Boynton Beach FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Boynton Beach FL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Boynton Beach FL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

Boynton Beach FL student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Boynton Beach FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Boynton Beach home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Boynton Beach FL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Boynton Beach FL area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Boynton Beach FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Boynton Beach FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Boynton Beach health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Boynton Beach FL residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Boynton Beach FL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Boynton Beach, Florida

Boynton Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 68,217 at the 2010 census. In 2017, the city had an estimated population of 73,992 according to the University of Florida, Bureau of Economic and Business Research.[5] Boynton Beach is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people at the 2015 census.

In 1894, two years before Henry Morrison Flagler built his railroad, a former American Civil War major named Nathan Boynton first set eyes on the area that now bears his name. Boynton hailed from Port Huron, Michigan. He was so impressed by the natural beauty of the year-round sunshine and pristine beaches, he built the famous Boynton Hotel, where he also spent winters with his family. The first settlers, whom Boynton had brought along from Michigan, soon realized that many fruits and vegetables thrived in the fertile climate. Pineapples, tomatoes, mangoes, and citrus fruit were packed in crates and shipped by the ton on the newly built Florida East Coast Railroad to satisfy the appetites of hungry Americans across the country. Major Boynton died on May 27, 1911 in Port Huron, but the hotel lasted until 1925.

Boynton Beach was founded on September 26, 1898 when Byrd Spilman Dewey and her husband Fred S. Dewey filed the original plat in the Dade County courthouse for the Town of Boynton.[6] The town was incorporated in 1920 as the Town of Boynton. The name "Boynton Beach" was first used by a community that broke off from the Town of Boynton in 1931. In 1939, that community changed its name to "Ocean Ridge" while The Town of Boynton took the name "Boynton Beach" in 1941.[7]
