Sonogram Tech Job Description

Dover DE ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Dover DE hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Dover DE ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Dover DE clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Delaware or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Dover DE student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Dover DE outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Dover home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Dover DE ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dover DE area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Dover DE employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Dover DE clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Dover health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Delaware healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Dover DE home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dover DE area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Dover, Delaware

Dover (/ˈdoʊvər/) is the capital and second-largest city[4] in the U.S. state of Delaware. It is also the county seat of Kent County, and the principal city of the Dover, DE Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Kent County and is part of the Philadelphia-Wilmington-Camden, PA-NJ-DE-MD Combined Statistical Area. It is located on the St. Jones River in the Delaware River coastal plain. It was named by William Penn of Dover in Kent, England. As of 2010, the city had a population of 36,047.[5]

First recorded in its Latinised form of Portus Dubris, the name derives from the Brythonic word for waters (dwfr in Middle Welsh). The same element is present in the towns French (Douvres) and Modern Welsh (Dofr) forms. The city is named after Dover, Kent in England.

Dover was founded as the court town for newly established Kent County in 1683 by William Penn, the proprietor of the territory generally known as the "Lower Counties on the Delaware." Later, in 1717, the city was officially laid out by a special commission of the Delaware General Assembly. The capital of the state of Delaware was moved here from New Castle in 1777 because of its central location and relative safety from British raiders on the Delaware River. Because of an act passed in October 1779, the assembly elected to meet at any place in the state they saw fit, meeting successively in Wilmington, Lewes, Dover, New Castle, and Lewes again, until it finally settled down permanently in Dover in October 1781.[6] The city's central square, known as The Green, was the location of many rallies, troop reviews, and other patriotic events. To this day, The Green remains the heart of Dover's historic district and is the location of the Delaware Supreme Court and the Kent County Courthouse.
