Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Dagsboro DE ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Dagsboro DE clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Dagsboro DE ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Dagsboro DE clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Delaware or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

Dagsboro DE student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dagsboro DE outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Dagsboro home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Dagsboro DE ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dagsboro DE area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Dagsboro DE health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Dagsboro DE hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Dagsboro health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Delaware healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Dagsboro DE residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Dagsboro DE area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
