Sharon CT student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Sharon CT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Sharon home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Sharon CT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sharon CT area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Sharon CT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Sharon CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Sharon healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Sharon CT home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Sharon CT area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
