Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Roxbury CT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Roxbury CT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Roxbury CT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Connecticut or whatever state you choose to work in.

Roxbury CT student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Roxbury CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Roxbury home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Roxbury CT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Roxbury CT area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Roxbury CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with Roxbury CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Roxbury health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Roxbury CT residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Roxbury CT area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Roxbury, Connecticut

Roxbury, whose Indian name was "Shepaug", a Mahican name signifiying "rocky water", was settled about the year 1713. Originally a part of Woodbury, the town was incorporated in October 1796. Roxbury is either descriptively named, or the name is a transfer from Roxbury, Massachusetts.[1]

Mine Hill and its minerals have been associated with Roxbury since the middle of the 18th century. A silver mine was opened here and was later found to contain spathic iron, specially adapted to steel making and a small smelting furnace was built. The abundance of granite found in many of Mine Hill's quarries provided the building material for the ore roaster and blast furnace, as well as for such world wonders as the Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 26.3 square miles (68 km2), of which, 26.2 square miles (68 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (0.23%) is water.
