Sonographer Occupation Summary

Milford CT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Milford CT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Milford CT ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Milford CT clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

Milford CT student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Milford CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Milford home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

What to ask Milford CT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Milford CT area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Milford CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Milford CT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Milford medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Milford CT residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Milford CT area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Milford, Connecticut

Milford is a city within Coastal Connecticut and New Haven County, Connecticut, between Bridgeport, Connecticut and New Haven, Connecticut, United States. The population was estimated to be 52,536 in a July 2016 estimate.[5] The city includes the borough of Woodmont. Milford is part of the New York-Newark Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area.

The land which today comprises Milford, Orange and West Haven was purchased on February 1, 1639 from Ansantawae, chief of the local Paugussets (an Algonquian tribe) by English settlers affiliated with the contemporary New Haven Colony. Originally, the area was known as "Wepawaug", after the small river which runs through the town, and which has given its name to several streets in both Milford and Orange.

During the Revolutionary War the Milford section of the Boston Post Road, a vital route connecting Boston, New York and other major coastal cities, was blockaded by Continental forces, and Fort Trumbull was constructed to protect the town. The site of the blockade is commemorated by the Liberty Rock monument.
