Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Hawleyville CT ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Hawleyville CT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Connecticut or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

Hawleyville CT student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hawleyville CT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Hawleyville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Hawleyville CT ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Hawleyville CT area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Hawleyville CT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Hawleyville CT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Hawleyville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Hawleyville CT home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hawleyville CT area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
