They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Danielson CT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure

  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Danielson CT ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Danielson CT clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

Danielson CT student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Danielson CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Danielson home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Danielson CT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Danielson CT area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Danielson CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Danielson CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Danielson health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Danielson CT residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Danielson CT area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
