After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Colebrook CT student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Colebrook CT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Colebrook home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Colebrook CT area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Colebrook CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Colebrook CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Colebrook health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Colebrook CT home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Colebrook CT area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
