Chaplin CT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Chaplin CT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Chaplin CT ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Chaplin CT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Connecticut or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Chaplin CT student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Chaplin CT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Chaplin home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Chaplin CT ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Chaplin CT area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Chaplin CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Chaplin CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Chaplin healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Chaplin CT home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Chaplin CT area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
