Sonographer Work Summary

Amston CT ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Amston CT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Amston CT ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Amston CT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Connecticut or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

Amston CT student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Amston CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Amston home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Amston CT ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Amston CT area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Amston CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Amston CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Amston healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Amston CT residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Amston CT area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
