Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Woodland Park CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Woodland Park CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Woodland Park CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Woodland Park CO hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

Woodland Park CO student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Woodland Park CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Woodland Park home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Woodland Park CO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Woodland Park CO area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Woodland Park CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Woodland Park CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Woodland Park medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Woodland Park CO home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Woodland Park CO area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
