They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Longmont CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Longmont CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Longmont CO clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

Longmont CO student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Longmont CO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Longmont home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Longmont CO ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Longmont CO area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Longmont CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Longmont CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Longmont health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Longmont CO home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Longmont CO area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Longmont, Colorado

Longmont is a Home Rule Municipality in Boulder and Weld counties of the U.S. state of Colorado. Longmont is located northeast of the county seat of Boulder and 33 miles (53 km) north-northwest of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver.

Longmont was founded in 1871 by a group of people from Chicago, Illinois. Originally called the Chicago-Colorado Colony, the men sold memberships in the town and with the proceeds purchased the land necessary for the town hall. As the first planned community in Boulder County, the city streets were laid out in a grid plan in a square mile. The city began to flourish as an agricultural community after the building of the Colorado Central Railroad line arrived northward from Boulder in 1877. During the 1940s, Longmont began to grow beyond these original limits.

In 1925, the Ku Klux Klan gained control of Longmont 's City Council in an election. They began construction of a large pork-barrel project, Chimney Rock Dam, above Lyons and marched up and down Main Street in their costumes. In the 1927 election they were voted out of office, and their influence soon declined. Work on Chimney Rock Dam was abandoned as unfeasible, and its foundations are still visible in the St. Vrain River.
