Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Leadville CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Leadville CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Leadville CO hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

Leadville CO student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Leadville CO hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Leadville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Leadville CO ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Leadville CO area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Leadville CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Leadville CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Leadville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Leadville CO home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Leadville CO area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Leadville, Colorado

Leadville is the statutory city that is the county seat and only incorporated municipality in Lake County, Colorado, United States.[7] The city population was 2,759 at the 2010 United States Census. Situated at an elevation of 10,152 feet (3,094 m), Leadville has the highest elevation of any incorporated city in the United States. Originally called Silver City, Leadville was the last place Doc Holliday was a law man and the first proposed capital of the state. A former silver mining town that lies amongst the headwaters of the Arkansas River in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the Leadville Historic District contains many historic structures and sites in its dynamic mining era. In the late 19th century, Leadville was the second most populous city in Colorado, after Denver. Leadville is notable for having a large number of 14,000 foot peaks viewable from town.

The Leadville area was first settled in 1859 when placer gold was discovered in California Gulch during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush.[8] By 1860, a town, Oro City ("oro" is the Spanish word for gold), located about a mile from present-day Leadville, had sprung up and a year later its population had reached more than 5,000. But the boom was brief because the placer-mined gold soon ran out and Oro City never became a major settlement.

The early miners had noted that mining for placer gold was hampered by heavy black sand in the sluice boxes, and in 1874 it was discovered that the heavy sand that impeded gold recovery was the lead mineral cerussite, which has a high silver content. Prospectors traced the cerussite to its source, present day Leadville, and by 1876 had discovered several silver-lead lode deposits.[8][9]
