Sonographer Work Summary

Florence CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Florence CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Florence CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Florence CO hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

Florence CO student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Florence CO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Florence home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Florence CO ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Florence CO area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Florence CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Florence CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Florence medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Florence CO home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Florence CO area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    ADX Florence

The United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility (USP Florence ADMAX) is an American federal prison which provides a higher level of custody than a maximum security prison. It is classed as a supermax or "control unit" prison, where the safety of inmates and staff is paramount. It is located in Fremont County, Colorado and opened in 1994, and it is informally known as the "Alcatraz of the Rockies".

The Federal Bureau of Prisons needed a unit designed specifically for the secure housing of those prisoners most capable of violence toward staff or other inmates. Prisoners spend 23 hours per day in single, sound-proof cells with facilities made of poured concrete to deter self-harm, and 24-hour supervision, carried out intensively with high staff-inmate ratios. Phones are generally banned and only limited broadcast entertainment is permitted. After three years in maximum confinement, some prisoners may be transferred to a less restrictive prison. The aim is to encourage "reasonably peaceful behavior" from the most violent "career" prisoners.

The institution is unofficially known as ADX Florence, or the "Alcatraz of the Rockies".[2] It is part of the Florence Federal Correctional Complex, which is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), a division of the United States Department of Justice. The complex also includes an adjacent minimum-security camp that, as of February 2019[update], houses more prisoners than the supermax unit.
