Eldorado Springs CO ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have decided to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Eldorado Springs CO, the next step is to start the procedure of choosing a school. First, you must find the ideal program that will provide the proper training to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each school so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? Most prospective students will begin by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Eldorado Springs CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Eldorado Springs CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Eldorado Springs CO ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Eldorado Springs CO clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Colorado or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

Eldorado Springs CO student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Eldorado Springs CO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Eldorado Springs home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Eldorado Springs CO ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Eldorado Springs CO area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Eldorado Springs CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Eldorado Springs CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Eldorado Springs health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Eldorado Springs CO residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Eldorado Springs CO area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
