An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Colorado or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Dove Creek CO student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Dove Creek CO hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Dove Creek home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Dove Creek CO ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dove Creek CO area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Dove Creek CO employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Dove Creek CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Dove Creek medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Dove Creek CO residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dove Creek CO area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
