Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Carbondale CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Carbondale CO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Carbondale CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Carbondale CO hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Colorado or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

Carbondale CO student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Carbondale CO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Carbondale home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Carbondale CO ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Carbondale CO area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Carbondale CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Carbondale CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Carbondale healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Carbondale CO residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Carbondale CO area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
