Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Byers CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Byers CO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Byers CO ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Byers CO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

Byers CO student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Byers CO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Byers home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Byers CO ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Byers CO area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Byers CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Byers CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Byers medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Byers CO residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Byers CO area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
