Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Allenspark CO ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Allenspark CO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Allenspark CO ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Allenspark CO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

Allenspark CO student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Allenspark CO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Allenspark home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Allenspark CO ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Allenspark CO area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Allenspark CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Allenspark CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Allenspark medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Allenspark CO residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Allenspark CO area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
