Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Woodacre CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Woodacre CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Woodacre CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Woodacre CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

Woodacre CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Woodacre CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Woodacre home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Woodacre CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Woodacre CA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Woodacre CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Woodacre CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Woodacre healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Woodacre CA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woodacre CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
