Strathmore CA ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Strathmore CA, it’s time to begin the process of picking a school. To begin with, you must find the right program that will provide the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s very important that you research each college so that you can assess and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? Many students will start by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other important factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this article. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Strathmore CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Strathmore CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Strathmore CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Strathmore CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

Strathmore CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Strathmore CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Strathmore home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

What to ask Strathmore CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Strathmore CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Strathmore CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Strathmore CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Strathmore medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Strathmore CA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Strathmore CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
