Rio Linda CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Rio Linda CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them

Rio Linda CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Rio Linda CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

Rio Linda CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Rio Linda CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Rio Linda home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Rio Linda CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Rio Linda CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Rio Linda CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Rio Linda CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Rio Linda healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Rio Linda CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rio Linda CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
