Marina CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Marina CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Marina CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Marina CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Marina CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Marina CA area, check that they are available. This is the first such official recognition on old Fort Ord.
