Sonographer Job Summary

Lockeford CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Lockeford CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Lockeford CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Lockeford CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

Lockeford CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lockeford CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Lockeford home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Lockeford CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Lockeford CA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Lockeford CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Lockeford CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Lockeford healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Lockeford CA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lockeford CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
