Linden CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Linden CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Linden CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Linden home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Linden CA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Linden CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Linden CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Linden CA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Linden CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
