Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Klamath CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Klamath CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Klamath CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Klamath CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

Klamath CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Klamath CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Klamath home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Klamath CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Klamath CA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Klamath CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Klamath CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Klamath healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Klamath CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Klamath CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
