Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Kentfield CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Kentfield CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Kentfield CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Kentfield CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

Kentfield CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Kentfield CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Kentfield home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Kentfield CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Kentfield CA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Kentfield CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Kentfield CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Kentfield medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Kentfield CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kentfield CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
