Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Hilmar CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Hilmar CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Hilmar CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Hilmar CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

Hilmar CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Hilmar CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Hilmar home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

What to ask Hilmar CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Hilmar CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hilmar CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have associations with Hilmar CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Hilmar health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Hilmar CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Hilmar CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
