Elmira CA ultrasound technician testing patientSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Elmira CA, it’s time to begin the procedure of choosing a college. First, you must find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate education to become a qualified professional. And since a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? A number of potential students will start by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this article. Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Elmira CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Elmira CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Elmira CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Elmira CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

Elmira CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Elmira CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Elmira home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

What to ask Elmira CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Elmira CA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Elmira CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Elmira CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Elmira medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Elmira CA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Elmira CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
