Dinuba CA ultrasound technician testing patientNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Dinuba CA, it’s time to begin the process of choosing a college. To begin with, you must find the ideal program that will provide the proper training to become a qualified professional. And because some states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification examination. So it’s very important that you research each program so that you can assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Most students will start by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other significant factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are available.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Dinuba CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Dinuba CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Dinuba CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Dinuba CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

Dinuba CA student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Dinuba CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Dinuba home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

What to ask Dinuba CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dinuba CA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Dinuba CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Dinuba CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Dinuba health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Dinuba CA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dinuba CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
