Clearlake CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Most work in Clearlake CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Clearlake CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Clearlake CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

Clearlake CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Clearlake CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Clearlake home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

What to ask Clearlake CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Clearlake CA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Clearlake CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Clearlake CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Clearlake medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Clearlake CA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Clearlake CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Clearlake, California

Clearlake is a city in Lake County, California, United States.[3] Clearlake is 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north-northwest of Lower Lake,[5] at an elevation of 1417 feet (432 m).[3] As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 15,250, up from 13,142 in 2000. It takes its name from Clear Lake.

The first inhabitants of Clearlake were the Pomo Indians who gave the name to many of the areas features including Mount Konocti. Beginning in 1821, enslavement and mistreatment by Spanish soldiers and missionaries, Mexican land barons, European settlers, and gold diggers, combined with a lack of natural immunity to European diseases, which resulted in a massive wave of deaths. The result of this was massive amounts of land freed up for the white settlers who arrived during the gold rush.[6]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 square miles (27 km2), of which, 10.1 square miles (26 km2) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) of it is water. The total area is 4.27% water.
