Zephyrhills FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Zephyrhills FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Zephyrhills FL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

Zephyrhills FL student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Zephyrhills FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Zephyrhills home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Zephyrhills FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Zephyrhills FL area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Zephyrhills FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Zephyrhills FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Zephyrhills healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Zephyrhills FL residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Zephyrhills FL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
