Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

West Greenwich RI ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in West Greenwich RI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

West Greenwich RI ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through West Greenwich RI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Rhode Island or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

West Greenwich RI student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local West Greenwich RI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your West Greenwich home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask West Greenwich RI ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the West Greenwich RI area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of West Greenwich RI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with West Greenwich RI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the West Greenwich healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their West Greenwich RI residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the West Greenwich RI area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
