Sonographer Job Summary

Subiaco AR ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Subiaco AR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Subiaco AR ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Subiaco AR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

Subiaco AR student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Subiaco AR outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Subiaco home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

What to ask Subiaco AR ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Subiaco AR area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Subiaco AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Subiaco AR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Subiaco health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Arkansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Subiaco AR residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Subiaco AR area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
