Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Litchfield CT ultrasound tech with patientSonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Litchfield CT clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Connecticut or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

Litchfield CT student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Litchfield CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Litchfield home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

What to ask Litchfield CT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Litchfield CT area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Litchfield CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Litchfield CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Litchfield health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Litchfield CT residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Litchfield CT area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
