Sonographer Job Description

Key Biscayne FL ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Key Biscayne FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Key Biscayne FL ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Key Biscayne FL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

Key Biscayne FL student attending online sonography classesAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Key Biscayne FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Key Biscayne home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

What to ask Key Biscayne FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Key Biscayne FL area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Key Biscayne FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Key Biscayne FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Key Biscayne medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Key Biscayne FL home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Key Biscayne FL area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Key Biscayne, Florida

Key Biscayne lies south of Miami Beach and east of Miami. The village is connected to Miami via the Rickenbacker Causeway, originally built in 1947. Because of its low elevation and direct exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, it is usually among the first Miami areas to be evacuated before an oncoming hurricane.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2). 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (8.63%) is water.

While there had been earlier schemes to develop a town on Key Biscayne, it wasn't until the opening of the four-mile (6 km) long Rickenbacker Causeway from Miami to Virginia Key and on to Key Biscayne in 1947 that the island was opened up to large scale residential development. The northern two-thirds of the island had been operated as the largest coconut plantation in the continental United States during the first half of the 20th century. In 1940 the Matheson family donated over 800 acres (3.2 km2) of their land to Dade County for a public park (Crandon Park) in exchange for a commitment that the county would build a causeway to the island. The remaining Matheson property, stretching across the middle of the island, was then sold off to developers. Starting in 1951, the Mackle Construction Company offered new homes on the island for US$9,540, with just US$500 down. A U.S. Post Office contract branch was opened, the Community Church started holding services in an old coconut-husking shed, and the Key Biscayne Elementary School opened in 1952.[7]
