Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Groveland CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Groveland CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Groveland CA ultrasound tech with patientSonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Groveland CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

Groveland CA student attending online sonography classesAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Groveland CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Groveland home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

What to ask Groveland CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Groveland CA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Groveland CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Groveland CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Groveland medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Groveland CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Groveland CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
