Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Fowler CA ultrasound technician testing pregnant womanThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Fowler CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Fowler CA ultrasound tech with patientUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Fowler CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

Fowler CA student attending online sonography classesAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Fowler CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Fowler home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

What to ask Fowler CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Fowler CA area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Fowler CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Fowler CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Fowler health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Fowler CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fowler CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
